Aboriginal Landscape and Historic Trains: Waldviertler Schmalspurbahnen

At the northernmost part of Austria, in the Waldviertel, a network of narrow-gauge railway lines is operated for visitors who like to discover the natural beauty of this landscape dominated by large forests. The Waldviertler Narrow Gauge Railway plays an important role for the touristy developement of the region. Due to the steepest section that is called "Waldviertler Semmering" this network counts as one of the most beautiful of Austria.

That is why the government subsidises the railway line and the touristy bus route. Since 2001, after the shutdown of the daily passenger service the touristy trains started their sucessful revival. Trains are operated on boht lines. The southern branch with the "Waldviertler Semmering" heads to Groß Gerungs and the northern branch to Litschau, following beautiful rivers and passing idyllic fish ponds. Due to the engagement of NÖVOG and all its partners, the local communities, local tourist associaten and ÖBB the passenger frequency has reached a new top of more than 25.000 passengers per year.

Passengers get a warm welcome on the trains. Enjoy hours of pleasure and relaxation in the pretty cars that sway stress free through a rough, but natural exciting countryside.

Trains are operated during the season (May 1. - September 30., 2007) on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday and national holidays. Certainly, trains have a snack car in service. Visitors can choose among a wide range of packages from a one-day-trip to the butterfly paradise or bears park to holidays that include a trip with the historic train. Trains are operated either with diesel or steam engine.

From Vienna start your trip to the Waldviertel at the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof (trams D, 5, 33). You can also get on the train in Spittelau (U4, U6) or Heiligenstadt (U4, S45). Gmünd is your starting point for both tours on the southern and northern branch. On Wednesdays and Sundays/national holidays leave Vienna at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof at 7:25, on Saturdays leave at 10:29.
